Cameroon : Consular activities suspended following damage to the embassy

Several demonstrations have taken place in recent weeks to protest against the re-election of President Paul Biya.

On Saturday evening, January 26, about fifty protesters against the re-election of President Paul Biya in October 2018 broke into the offices of the Embassy of Cameroon located rue d’Auteuil in the 16th arrondissement of Paris.

Around 7pm, the demonstrators, live on Facebook Live, entered the Embassy’s offices, vandalizing in particular the portraits of the Head of State and the consular offices, as you will see below.

Following these outbursts, which lasted nearly two hours, the protesters were evacuated by the police, leaving the embassy in a deplorable state, forcing the consular authorities to suspend their activities until further notice, as indicated in the statement below.

On the same day, January 26, in many cities across the country, several demonstrations not authorized by the government and organized by the MRC, which left Maurice Kamto as a former presidential candidate, led to more than a hundred arrests, particularly in Douala where the arrests were « disproportionate » according to human rights organizations.
