India has begun its first trials of a coronavirus vaccine.
The development came at a time when the world’s second most populous country recorded nearly 49,000 new cases.
Total additional infections in India now stand at more than 1.3 million.
India has recorded 31,358 deaths, 757 of which occurred in the last 24 hours.
The All India Institute of Medical Sciences, a leading teaching hospital in the capital city of New Delhi, said it administered the first dose of a trial COVID-19 vaccine on Friday.
The candidate vaccine, Covaxin, is one of nearly two dozen human trials around the world.
