New eruption on Reunion Island

The Piton de la Fournaise erupted for the third time this Monday, July 29 at around noon. Known worldwide for its splendid and spectacular eruptions, but also regular, the Reunionese volcano offers, once again, a new spectacle! This time the eruption takes place on the northern side of the volcano, the ideal place to observe from the Pas de Bellecombe, the most popular place on the island.

This eruption was expected and follows a seismic crisis recorded by the Piton de la Fournaise Volcanological Observatory since 5:13 this morning.

Reunion Island, the intense island

This natural and exceptional event once again highlights the Intense Island: it is a new opportunity for the population and tourists to observe a breathtaking spectacle, in complete safety, around a natural enclosure. The Piton de la Fournaise is, today, one of the most active volcanoes in the world but also one of the major tourist attractions of the destination.

This third eruption puts the year 2019 not far from the year 2018, which had given rise to four spectacular eruptions!

It should be noted that the Prefect of La Réunion has triggered alert phase 2-2 « eruption in progress in the Fouqué enclosure » of the Orsec volcanic device. Public access to the enclosure from the Pas de Bellecombe trail or any other trail is prohibited until further notice.
