At 92 years of age, Béji Caïd Essebsi became the first democratically elected president since the country’s independence in 1956 in 2014. In December 2014, he won the presidential election with 55.68 % of the votes.

Since the Assembly of People’s Representatives, together with the Head of Government Youssef Chahed, who appeared very moved, the Speaker of Parliament Mohamed Ennaceur announced that he would take office as President of the Republic on Thursday 25 July 2019 in accordance with the provisions of Article 84 of the Constitution, which provides that the President of the Assembly shall immediately assume the duties of Acting President of the Republic, for a period of at least 45 days and not exceeding 90 days.
